Discusses the system level performance of UMTS networks under many different scenarios and conditions. This work addresses the optimization of the network performance, and presents methodologies in order to tackle this optimization task at different levels: the RF design, and the RRM settings. It also outlines specific optimization schemes.
The focus of this book is two-fold. On one hand, the system level performance of UMTS networks is assessed and discussed under many different scenarios and conditions, which is of paramount importance in order to illustrate the most relevant mechanisms and trade-offs that operators will have to take into account when designing, managing and optimizing their networks. On the other hand, the optimization of the network performance is also addressed, and detailed methodologies are presented in order to tackle this optimization task at two different levels: the RF design, which shapes the propagation scenario in which the UMTS system is going to be operated; and the RRM settings, which determine how the resources are going to be controlled. For both optimization levels, detailed descriptions of the relevant trade offs are provided and a survey on the state of the art is conducted. Then, specific optimization schemes are outlined and their performance potential is illustrated through case studies, in which the characterization of the achieved performance improvement is tightly related to the aforementioned UMTS performance discussions.
It features: pictures, Excel plots, Matlab plots and tables, and screenshots from simulation, planning and optimization tools.
