This book aims to provide readers with practical knowledge of the fundamentals of the digital transition concept, tools for designing and managing the operation of smart grids and substations, and critical issues in modernizing the energy sector. The inevitable transformation of the electric power industry is moving toward digitalization, which has taken the form of the concept of "Intelligent (smart) grids" (sometimes called "Digital Transition"). This has required coordinated work not only from the energy industry, but also from other stakeholders (government agencies, private firms, utilities, scientific and educational institutions, etc.) to solve numerous problems that arise during the transition to this advanced technology. It is obvious that the development of new components of energy systems, such as smart meters, monitoring and geolocation equipment, new disaster recovery systems, and energy storage systems, should be supplemented by the creation of the necessary communication infrastructure, modernization of existing network components, implementation of relevant regulations, training of highly qualified personnel.

The book covers all the main tasks and ways to solve them for the implementation of this technology. It summarizes materials from numerous monographs, scientific articles, and conference reports discussing these issues.

Ushakov Vasiliy Yakovlevich Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honoured Worker of Science and Technology of Russia. Professor Vasily Ya. Ushakov received Ph.D. degree in 1965 and Doctor of Science degree in 1973 from Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU).

Vasily Ya. Ushakov is Well-Known Expert in high-voltage engineering, particularly in the area of electric breakdown of condensed medium and insulation of pulsed power equipment. Now he is interested in problems of digitalization of the power systems, increase of energy production, transmission and consumption effectiveness, and solution methods of the main problems associated with energy supply of the world population. He has published about 400 scientific articles and 24 monographs and textbooks. From 1974 to 1981 he was Head of high-voltage department of Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), from 1979 to 1992 he was Director of High-Voltage Research Institute at TPU, and from 1992 to 2001 Vice-Rector for research of TPU.

Rakhmonov Ikromjon Usmonovich Doctor of Technical Sciences, is Professor. He is Head of the Department of "Power Supply" at Tashkent State Technical University. He is conducting research in the fields of increasing the efficiency of energy consumption in industrial enterprises. Approximately 200 research works have been published. This includes 6 monographs and 80 scientific articles, out of which 52 have been published in prestigious international scientific journals, and 47 have been published in journals and proceedings within the Scopus database. Under the scientific supervision of I.U. Rakhmonov, 8 Ph.D. dissertations were successfully defended, and currently, 4 Ph.D. students and 6 independent researchers are conducting their research under his guidance.

Alisher Bakhramzhonovich Askarov has received the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees at National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University, Russia, in 2018 and 2023, respectively. Currently he is an Associate Professor of Division for Power and Electrical Engineering, School of Energy and Power Engineering, National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. His research focuses on power system modeling, power system automation analysis, IEC61850-based digital substations, and development of power converter control algorithms. The results of Dr. Alisher B. Askarov academic work are presented in over 50 scientific papers. H-index in Scopus database is 13.

Nikitin Dmitriy Sergeevich Ph.D., is Associate Professor in National Research Tomsk Polytechnic University. His research interests focus on high voltage, electric discharge, and plasma technologies. New technology for producing structural and functional materials, which is based on pulsed electric discharge, is the result of his experimental work. He provides special courses for bachelor and master teaching specialization Digital Power Engineering and Power networks and stations . New plasma devices and methods for obtaining materials have been designed and engineered. Now D. S. Nikitin is Project Leader and Main Performer in the projects of the Russian Science Foundation. He has published more than 100 scientific articles and textbooks (including more than 20 articles in scientific journals Q1-Q2). H-index in Scopus database is 12. Under the scientific supervision of D. S. Nikitin, 2 Ph.D. students are conducting their research.
