The world’s first public railway, the Stockton & Darlington Railway, opened in the northeast of England in 1825 and marked the start of rail travel in Britain and across the world. Author and illustrator Sherin Aminossehe moved from Iran to England as a child, training as an architect. She is now the Ministry of Defence’s first Director of Infrastructure. She has been drawing since she could hold a pencil, and recently published the book The Road Untravelled, a Covid lockdown project for charity, wherein she took requests for drawings of longed-for destinations from London to Nepal, providing imaginary escape when no one could travel.
