Advances in Biomaterials for Drug Delivery: Properties, Clinical Applications and Challenges comprehensively reviews various biomaterials and biomaterial-derived carrier systems, with a specific focus on their application in drug delivery, and their clinical and regulatory challenges. A broad range of biomaterials for drug delivery are covered, including natural biomaterials, inorganic biomaterials, synthetic biomaterials, 3-D/4-D printed biomaterials, metal-based biomaterials, and polymeric and lipidic biomaterials. Various drug delivery approaches are detailed, from pulmonary and transdermal through to oral and systemic. Key to translational success of these novel platforms are the regulatory and clinical aspects of biomaterials development and application; these aspects are covered in each chapter, providing vital insight required to make informed decisions. Advances in Biomaterials for Drug Delivery: Properties, Clinical Applications and Challenges is an interesting resource for researchers and academics in the fields in biomaterials, materials science, polymer science, and pharmaceutical science, as well as clinicians and R&D groups with an interest in the development of novel biomaterials for drug delivery.

Dr Teenu Sharma is currently serving as an Assistant Professor, Pharmaceutics, Chitkara College of Pharmacy, Chitkara University, Punjab, India. She has worked in teaching and research for nearly 9 years and has published over 40 publications in various international peer-reviewed journals, as well as 12 book chapters. Her research interests include the application of QbD principles in drug delivery formulation and/or analytical development of various drugs and bioactives. Dr Teenu was awarded with DST INSPIRE Senior Research Fellowship by Govt of India, as well as “Best Research Paper Recognition Award 2020” by Drug Delivery and Translational Research (DDTR, Controlled Release Society, USA) for one of her QbD-based formulation research work, and with Dr P D Sethi Award 2019 and 2020 for Best Publication in QbD-based Pharmaceutical Analysis by Kongposh Publications, India. She has been instrumental in organizing various international conferences while at Panjab University, such as NanoSciTech 2017 and ICONICA 2020, and in bringing about a four-volume book series on Emerging Trends in NanoBioMedicine. Eliana B. Souto is Habil. Professor from the Department of Pharmaceutical Technology of the Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Porto. Prof. Souto graduated in Pharmaceutical Sciences from University of Coimbra (2000), is holder of a master’s in science degree in Pharmaceutical Technology from University of Porto (2002), and PhD in Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology and Biopharmaceutics from the Institut fuer Pharmazie der Freie Universitaet Berlin, Germany (2005). Her research lines include the design, development, and characterization of new drug delivery systems to overcome biological barriers. Prof. Souto serves as Associate Editor, member of the Editorial Board, and Reviewer of several international scientific journals and has published more than 500 works (original and review papers, books and book chapters) in the field of nanosciences and nanomedicine. Prof. Souto also acts as independent expert for several national, European and international funding agencies, and as consultant for pharmaceutical industry. Dr Atul Jain is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Pharmaceutics, Delhi Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research, New Delhi, India. His research interests include diverse novel drug delivery systems for delivery of anticancer molecules; polymeric/lipidic and lipid-polymer hybrid nanocarriers, pharmacokinetics etc. He has published more than 35 articles in international journals, as well as 13 book chapters. He has won several awards for best poster and has spoken at several conference proceedings.
