Environmental assessment of bioplastics in a circular economy

Bioplastics have been in the focus of research for several decades now, with the goal to develop stainable alternatives to conventional fossil-based plastics. However, challenges are facing bioplastics in context of a circular economy similar to conventional plastics. This work develops a systematic approach for the environmental assesment of bioplastics in the framework of a circular economy based on life cycle assessment methodology. Thereby an assessment of products from an environmental point of view and the assessment of environmentally preferable end-of-life options for bioplastics is enabled.
