Gives an understanding of basic power quality parameters; describes features and functions that power quality monitors may possess; consists of a table of power quality monitors supplied by various manufacturers; and a list detailing the suppliers' and manufacturers' is provided.
Written by experts from ERA Technology, this eagerly anticipated publication has stemmed from the popularity of ERA's 1999 publication 'How to Improve Voltage Dip Immunity in Industrial and Commercial Power Distribution Systems'. It identifies a number of techniques to mitigate against supply disturbances and also stressed that power quality monitoring and identification of disturbances played an important role in the mitigation process. Unplanned voltage disturbances are accepted as being the largest cause of disruption in industrial and commercial power supply systems in today's modern world. Voltage dips, in particular, cause more disruption than supply outages. This is because the effects can be the same, i.e. loss of revenue due to processes stopping in an unplanned fashion, but voltage dips are more frequent than total supply interruptions. Consumer's perception of power quality may have changed over the past few years. The quality of the power supplied is likely to have changed very little in this time, due mainly to the fixed nature of the network. What has changed is that consumers are using a greater proportion of more sensitive equipment.
This sensitive equipment can fail when connected to the existing power supplies. The overall aim of this publication is to help in the selection of power quality monitoring instruments. The publication starts by introducing power quality parameters and goes on to review the functions and features that are offered by modern power quality monitors. Finally the publication provides a list of power quality monitors available in the market, details of their suppliers and the range of features and functions they offer. The publication is not intended to make a comparison or provide any opinion of the many different monitors available, but to give the reader information that will help select the most suitable type of monitor required for the intended application. It is recommended that the reader contact the suppliers to obtain detailed information on products they are interested in, before making a decision on a specific monitor or supplier. The publication consists of four main parts, the first of which aims to give the reader an understanding of basic power quality parameters by describing some of the parameters in a glossary.
The second describes general features and functions that power quality monitors may possess. The third consists of a table of power quality monitors supplied by various manufacturers, and details some of their main features and functions. Finally, a list detailing the suppliers' and manufacturers' contact details is provided.
