The papers comprising this volume cover fundamental and applied research in the various fields of earthquake engineering relevant to the design of structures; they were presented at the 14th International Conference on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures.
The contributions comprising this volume highlight the continuous need of carrying out further research on major earthquakes and associated effects such as tsunamis. The problems arising from such catastrophic events intensify as population pressure results in buildings in regions of high seismic vulnerability. A better understanding of these phenomena and their consequences is required for designing earthquake resistant structures as well as carrying out risk assessments and vulnerability studies.

The challenge of protecting the built environment in earthquake-prone regions involves not only the optimal design and construction of new facilities but also the upgrading and rehabilitation of existing structures including heritage buildings. The latter include the types of highly specialized retrofitting employed to protect the built heritage.

The papers comprising this volume were presented at the 14th International Conference on Earthquake Resistant Engineering Structures and cover fundamental and applied research addressing a range of issues among those mentioned above.

Section 1: Liquefaction and landslides

A probabilistic framework for estimating landslide probability using major triggering factors; Assessing liquefaction potential using adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference
system

Section 2: Building performance during earthquakes

Enhancing seismic structural damage assessment of low-to-medium rise reinforced concrete framed buildings using artificial intelligence; Utilizing experimental data in comparative evaluation of seismic techniques for composite steel–concrete wall with central openings; Seismic behaviour of non-prequalified connections of reduced section
beams with composite columns; Seismic vulnerability and average damage grade assessment of residential building stock in São Miguel Island, Azores

Section 3: Heritage structures

Seismic behaviour of multi-arched and multi-vaulted historical masonry structures

Section 4: Performance-based design

Seismic performance and functional integrity of Al-Sharqiyah Expressway Tunnel-2: A framework for resilient tunnel design in Oman; Elastic lateral buckling load of continuous braced H-shaped beams with fork restraint under gradient bending moments
