This book discusses the fundamentals and practical applications of mineral material science, as well as future outlook of mineral functional materials. It will be a one-stop manual of mineral material science, and will be useful to researchers, scholars, practitioners and students in the field of mineral material science.

Mineral materials science is an emerging comprehensive multidisciplinary

area. Over the past 40 years, Chinese scientists and practitioners have carried

out a great deal of research work, which has had a deeper understanding of this

discipline. This book discusses the fundamentals and practical applications of

minerals, as well as the content of mineral functional materials. It will be a one-stop

manual of mineral materials science, and will be useful to researchers,

scholars, practitioners and students in the field of mineral materials science.

Ling Wang, male, Professor of Mineralogy. He was born in 1958 in Emeishan City, Sichuan Province, China, holds a doctorate degree and serves as a second-level Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Chengdu University of Technology. He is a recipient of the Special Government Allowance from the State Council of the People’s Republic of China and an academic and technical leader in Sichuan Province.  He has studied and worked at institutions including Southwest University of Science and Technology, Central South University, Changsha Institute of Geotectonics (Chinese Academy of Sciences), and University of Cambridge in the UK.  He has successively served as an editorial board member of academic journals such as Acta Mineralogica Sinica, Mineralogy and Petrology, Acta Petrologica et Mineralogica. Additionally, he holds leadership roles such as Vice President of the Mineralogical, Petrological and Geochemical Society of Sichuan Province, Deputy Director of the Professional Committee for Efficient Utilization of Non-Metallic Mineral Resources under the Mineralogical, Petrological and Geochemical Society of China, and Vice President of the Process Petrology Branch of the Chinese Ceramic Society.  He has long been engaged in research on mineral materials and quartz raw materials. He has presided over 7 general projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, as well as several key projects of the National Science and Technology Research and Development Program. He has trained a total of 115 post - doctoral researchers, doctoral students, and master's students. He holds 48 invention patents authorized by the National Intellectual Property Administration of China (42 as first inventor). He has edited 5 special issues of China's key scientific and technological periodicals, published 185 academic papers, and was selected as one of the top 1% highly-cited scholars in CNKI in 2024. His accolades include the Special Award of the President's Scholarship of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Science and Technology Progress Award of Hunan Province, China.  His representative achievements include publishing Principles of Mineral Material Science in 2021, which is the first basic, practical, and systematic theoretical work globally addressing mineral material properties and applications, recognized as the founding work in the field of mineral material science. Based on this monograph, he published the first systematic theoretical and disciplinary knowledge-based textbook Mineral Materials Science for universities in 2023. He pioneered the discovery of an extra-large ceramsite shale deposit in Chengkou County, Chongqing, with potential economic value of its proven resource volume exceeds 20 billion RMB. Additionally, He was the first to discover the high quality ore of high-purity quartz (Grade A ore) that can meet the needs of industrial production in China. Using this as raw material, he presided over the construction of China's first fully-automated high-end product production line for 4N8 high-purity quartz sand. This patented industrialization achievement was listed in the Year 2022 Typical Cases on Market-Oriented Operation of Intellectual Property in Sichuan, China and the Chengdu Scientific Achievement Transformation White Paper (2023).
