The discovery of new coumarin-based drug candidates during the last decades has been covered to assist the pharmaceutical, bioorganic and medicinal chemists for their further research on coumarin-based molecules.
Shehryar Hameed obtained his M.Phil. degree in Organic Chemistry from H.E.J Research Institute of Chemistry, the University of Karachi under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Khalid. M. Khan. He is currently a doctoral researcher at the H.E.J Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi. His research is focused on the “Synthesis of Some Biologically Active Compounds and Developing New Synthetic Methodologies. His research interests are the synthesis of versatile scaffolds such as substituted quinoxaline, 1,2,3-triazole, phenyl-3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-one and pyran heterocyclic derivatives in search of potential therapeutic agents and their broad range of medicinal applications for the development of novel α-amylase, α-glucosidase, urease, and cholinesterase inhibitors. He has numerous publications to his credit in various reputed journals of high impact factor. Prof. Dr. Khan is among the most prominent scientists of Pakistan recognized for his original contributions in the field of medicinal chemistry and drug discovery. He established a world-class medicinal and synthetic laboratory at the International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences, University of Karachi, focusing on the discovery of new enzyme inhibitors and other bioactive compounds. He is mentoring a large number of young researchers in the field of drug designing and drug and designing. He enriched world literature with several novel classes of bioactive substances and helped in the development of new pharmacophores. The major emphasis of his work is on the synthesis of inhibitors of clinically important enzymes. In his work, he uses a minimum pharmacophore approach and concentrates on the understanding of the functional profile of the active parts of potential drug candidates. His current research interests also include bioassay-directed isolation of natural products and the development of nano-medicines. Mehwish Solangi has obtained her M.Phil. degree in Organic Chemistry from H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, the University of Karachi under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Khalid. M. Khan. Currently, she is a doctoral researcher at the H.E.J. Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi. Her research was then focused on the “Synthesis and Bioactivities of Indole and Indoline Derivatives. Her present research interests involve the synthesis of versatile scaffolds based on substituted Indole, Benzisoxazole, and pyridazine heterocyclic derivatives in search of potential therapeutic agents and their broad range of medicinal applications for the development of novel drug candidates against antidiabetic, anti-Alzheimer’s, ROS scavengers.
