This book enables material engineers and researchers in the field of materials related to transportation equipment, graduate students in various technical fields, and engineers and researchers belonging to material users to grasp the full picture of material development and multi-materials technologies. Teruo Kishi is President of Innovative Structural Materials Association (ISMA). He is also the first President of National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) from April 2001 till June 2009 and Professor Emeritus, The University of Tokyo. He received the degree of Doctor of Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1969. His expertise is materials science, especially fracture mechanics and non-destructive testing of metal, ceramics, and composite materials. He received the following awards: Fellow of the Society, the American Ceramic Society (1996); the Legion d'Honneur, Officer of France (2004); Honda Memorial Award, Honda Foundation (2006); Barkhausen Award, Dresden, Germany (2007); Carl-von-Bach-Medal Award, Germany (2009); Distinguished Life Membership, ASM, USA (2010); Ostwald Fellowship, BAM, Germany (2010); Fellow of the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies, etc.
