Scientific research on the use of marine wave energy started in the 1970s. Nevertheless, no system is on the market promising an economically feasible operation. So far the systems developed do not produce enough electric energy in relation to their costs for build, installation and maintenance over the expected respectively achieved life time.
After early stage developments of new Wave Energy Converters fitting Power Take-Offs have to be found. Research on the differences of various Power Take-Off technologies has been published already. However, the according research works were carried out for certain Wave Energy Converter examples and considered the various Power Take-Off technologies only with reduced detail to enable a comparison. Accordingly, in this work the use of a hydraulic transmission as a Power Take-Off is analysed in detail. This technology is applicable to a wide range of different Wave Energy Converters. The intention is to identify the important aspects of the technology and thus to enable readers to develop a hydraulic Power Take-Off and to evaluate its suitability.
The aim of this work is to identify important aspects of a hydraulic Power Take-Off. A test-rig is used, which covers the complete Power Take-Off from the Wave Energy Converter motion to the electric power, which is fed to the grid, and includes a realistic modelling of the Wave Energy Converter motion. A detailed simulation model is validated with its measurement results. Thus, all aspects, which need to be considered, can be identified. This includes dynamic and energetic aspects and enables recommendations for the design process. The focus is put on the included components as well as on the control required to operate the Power Take-Off.
