This book explores how integrated management of environmental resources via a Nexus Approach can help to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It takes a process-oriented view on what should or needs to be done to implement a Nexus Approach and how this relates to SDGs.

After sketching the background and conceptual outline, contributions to the book explore key aspects of monitoring and implementation. Specifically, they:

  • focus on the importance of monitoring resource use and how to advance it at the international level to support SDG implementation,
  • exemplify the resources perspective on the nexus approach by exploring how to close the nitrogen cycle and stay within planetary boundaries,
  • elaborate on proven and emerging strategies for nexus implementation, highlighting means to enhance, monitor and analyse stakeholder participation,
  • explain how the horizontal and vertical nexus dimensions interact and can support SDG implementation.

The book sheds new light on key aspects of the interrelation between SDGs and the Nexus Approach and provides specific recommendations how to advance it.

Stephan Hülsmann is an Academic Officer at UNU-FLORES where he leads the Systems and Flux Analysis considering Global Change Assessment unit. He studied Biology in Göttingen, Kiel and Lund (Sweden) and graduated (Diplom) in Göttingen, Germany. He obtained his PhD at Technische Universität Dresden (integrated water quality management in reservoirs), followed by a research project at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology (NIOO) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). After returning to TU Dresden he worked as a senior research scientist with the interdisciplinary Hydro Sciences Department, Institute of Hydrobiology, prior to assuming his function as Project Officer at the UNU Vice Rectorate in Europe and UNU-FLORES. His research focuses on integrated water and watershed management, nutrient fluxes, and on responses of aquatic systems to stressors such as eutrophication and climate change, using systems analysis approaches, modelling, as well as experimental approaches. Dr. Reza Ardakanian of Iran is the Founding Director of UNU-FLORES. He has served as Director of the UN-Water Decade Programme on Capacity Development hosted by UNU since 2007 and served as Vice-Rector of UNU in Europe from 2009-2011. He has been on the boards of various international programmes/organizations such as the UNESCO International Hydrological Programme, the UNESCO Institute for Water Education, the International Hydropower Association, and the UNU Institute for Environment and Human Security. He holds a PhD in Water Resources Management from McMaster University (Canada) and is a faculty member of Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran. He held a number of national offices in Iran, including Deputy Minister for Water Affairs (2001-2005), Senior Vice-Minister (1998-2001) and Deputy Minister for Planning & Economic Affairs (1989-1991) with the Ministry of Energy, and Deputy Minister for Urban Development and Municipalities with the Ministry of Interior (1987-1989) and has been approved as Minister of Energy of Iran in October 2017.
