Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing and Design is the essential materials engineering text and resource for students developing skills and understanding of materials properties and selection for engineering applications. Taking a unique design-led approach that is broader in scope than other texts, Materials meets the curriculum needs of a wide variety of courses in the materials and design field, including introduction to materials science and engineering, engineering materials, materials selection and processing, and behavior of materials. This new edition retains its design-led focus and strong emphasis on visual communication while expanding its coverage of the physical basis of material properties, and process selection.

Mike Ashby is one of the world’s foremost authorities on materials selection. He is sole or lead author of several of Elsevier’s top selling engineering textbooks, including Materials and Design: The Art and Science of Material Selection in Product Design, Materials Selection in Mechanical Design, Materials and the Environment, Materials and Sustainable Development, and Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing and Design. He is also co-author of the books Engineering Materials 1&2, and Nanomaterials, Nanotechnologies and Design. Hugh Shercliff is an Emeritus Associate Professor in Materials in the Department of Engineering at the University of Cambridge (UK). His research experience spanned all classes of engineering materials, with an emphasis on process modelling applied to the forming and joining of light alloys. He is co-author with Michael Ashby and David Cebon of Materials: Engineering, Science, Processing and Design, Fourth Edition (Butterworth-Heinemann, 2018), and Introduction to Materials Science and Engineering (Butterworth-Heinemann, 2023). David Cebon is Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Cambridge University in the UK.
