This book presents applications of chemistry specific to topics, issues, and problems relevant to environmental engineering. It is the companion volume to Chemistry for Environmental Engineering. Considerable effort has been made to clarify and explain the subjects of air and water quality, including a section on colloids. Other topics include hazardous materials, radiation hazards and sources, toxicology and chemical hygiene, and a final chapter devoted to environmental issues of contemporary interest and importance.

Armen S. Casparian, professor of chemistry, Wentworth Institute of Technology (retired June 2013), is an adjunct professor at Community College of Rhode Island. He earned a BA in chemistry from Rutgers University and an MSc in physical chemistry from Brown University. He is a chemical and engineering consultant in private practice with over 40 years of experience and expertise in: designing, developing, and teaching applied and engineering chemistry courses; laboratory instruction and training; chemical health and safety issues; compliance with OSHA and EPA regulations, and product liability issues—paints, coatings and adhesives failure. Greg Sirokman is an associate professor of chemistry at Wentworth Institute of Technology, focusing on education of engineering students. He earned a BS in chemistry from Brandeis University and a PhD in inorganic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has personally mentored students in Wentworth's Environmental Science program and has several publications with ASEE on using games to teach at the college level. Dr. Sirokman has taken continuing education courses on renewable energy and modern materials science.
