In Alternative Ecological Risk Assessment the author, Larry V. Tannenbaum, provides a critical overview of current practices in the field and proposes alternatives. It is hoped that this approach will pave the way to a greater understanding of what useful ecological risk assessment of contaminated sites should entail. He argues that in many cases current practices do not provide a meaningful assessment of ecological risk, and that in some cases ecological risk assessment is actually unnecessary at conventional hazardous waste sites. (He states, for example, that the concept of scale is often ignored by practitioners, questions why animals like deer are routinely assessed at 5-acre sites, and the validity of much of the ecotoxicology data used currently.)

The book is aimed primarily at professionals, ecological risk assessment practitioners, and advanced students in the fields of environmental science, ecology, ecotoxicology, and health risk assessment.

Lawrence V. Tannenbaum (United States Public Health Command, Maryland, USA) is a certified senior ecologist and a full time health risk assessor working for the U.S. Army.  He is the sole inventor of a patented ecological assessment field-truthing method, and an associate editor of a Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry journal.

Lawrence Tannenbaum (United States Public Health Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland, USA) is a certified senior ecologist and a full-time health risk assessor working for the U.S. Army, with a previous (Superfund Program) history at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He is the inventor of a patented ecological assessment field-truthing method, and is an associate editor of a Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry journal.
