So true is this that architectural works can be divided into dead and living ones depending on whether the law of 'roaming through' has not been observed or whether on the contrary it has been brilliantly obeyed.' (Le Corbusier, 1942) The 'promenade architecturale' - the observer's pathway through the built space - is a central element of Le Corbusier's architectural and city planning designs. It is the sequence of images that unfolds before the eyes of the observer as he or she gradually advances through the structure. It is the creation of a hierarchy among the architectural events, a set of instructions for reading the work - the 'internal circulatory system' of architecture. With the help of the 'promenade architecturale', Le Corbusier created virtuosic imbrications of indoor and outdoor space, fluid spaces that reveal themselves as the visitor progresses. Architecture constitutes the space of processes of movement. Architektur wird durchwandert, durchschritten. [...]Das geht so weit, daß die Architekturen sich in tote und lebendige einteilen lassen, je nachdem ob das Gesetz des Durchwanderns nicht beachtet oder ob es im Gegenteil glänzend befolgt wurde.' (Le Corbusier, 1942) Die promenade architecturale - der auf den Betrachter ausgerichtete Weg durch den gebauten Raum - ist ein zentrales Element Le Corbusiers architektonischer und städtebaulicher Entwürfe. Sie ist die Bildabfolge, die sich vor dem Auge des schrittweise vorangehenden Betrachters entrollt. Sie ist die Hierarchisierung der architektonischen Ereignisse, die Leseanweisung - der 'innere Kreislauf' der Architektur. Mit Hilfe der promenade architecturale kreierte Le Corbusier virtuose Verschränkungen von Innen- und Außenraum, fließende Räume, die sich im Voranschreiten erschließen. Die Architektur bildet den Raum von Bewegungsabläufen. Der Titel untersucht die promenade architecturale Corbusiers in analytischer Art und Weise, in dem er sie an sieben Bauten nachvollzieht und ihre einzelnen Elemente bestimmt. Betrachtet werden die Villa Savoye, die Maisons La Roche-Jeanneret, das Penthouse 24 Nungesser et Coli, das Maison Jaoul B, die Usine Duval, der Pavillon du Brésil und das Monastère La Tourette.

Flora Samuel: Flora Samuel ist promovierte Architektin und Head of School der School of Architecture der University of Sheffield. In ihren Forschungen hat sie sich umfassend mit dem Schaffen Le Corbusiers befasst. Flora Samuel ist Autorin zahlreicher Publikationen, u.a. Le Corbusier in Detail, Architectural Press, Oxord 2007.
