This book is giving insight to a fascinating area of research. Nanophotonics does not only play an eminent role in the development of present and future devices for communication, lighting, or energy harvesting. Researchers do also reclaim requisites from science fiction back to science by creating new structures like metamaterials to form an invisible cloak. The reader will find a trustworthy first-hand source of information on Photonics and Metamaterials. On an accessible level, it compiles, in a glossary style, about 200 entries on different topics of up to date research. Each entry is presented on a full page and consists of an explanatory image and a short, simple to read account. Everything you always wanted to know about, whether this is the super-lens, quantum dots, active plasmonics, or optical cloaking? here is a single reference on undergraduate level which makes topics of research accessible to students, executives, funding bodies, and teachers, but is also of interest to scientists from in different areas of expertise. The editor Nikolay Zheludev is a leading scientists who manages to involve the brightest and most prominent heads of active research.
Hence, this is an unparalleled book which gives, for the first time, a complete picture of the area.
Nikolay Zheludev is Professor of Physics at the University of Southampton (UK). He received his MSc, PhD and DSc from Moscow State University and joined the University of Southampton in 1991, where he now serves as Deputy Director of the Optoelectronics Research Centre, and Director of the EPSRC Centre for Nanostructured Photonics Metamaterials. His awards include a Senior Research Fellowship with the Leverhulme Trust (2001), a Senior Research Professorship of the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (2002), and the Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award (2009). Nikolay Zheludev is Fellow of the Institute of Physics, UK, and Fellow of the Optical Society of America. He is Editor-in Chief of "Journal of Optics" (IOP Publishing), and has chaired many conferences on optics and photonics like CLEO/EQEC Europe and the US and European SPIE Conferences on Metamaterials. With NANOMETA, he has also created a new international meeting at the crossroads of nanophotonics and metamaterials.
