The book is divided into sections on frigates, destroyers, submarines, patrol craft, and aircraft. Antisubmarine, anti-air, anti-surface, and mine warfare are covered separately. For wargamers, there are tables with frequencies, load outs, and ranges. The authors prompt readers to discern areas of weakness and strength in the Chinese combat systems.
About the Author
James C. Bussert, a retired USN Master Chief Sonarman, is an ASW fire control safety deputy. He lives in Dalghren, VA. Bruce A. Elleman, a research professor at the Naval War College, is the author of Modern Chinese Warfare amongst other books.
James Bussert retired as a Master Chief Sonarman in 1979 after 25 years active duty on destroyer class ships. He has been working on antisubmarine fire control systems at two navy labs for 25 years and is specializing in weapon safety the last 15 years. His hobby is free lance writing over 200 articles since 1972, lately focusing on PLAN technology. This background culminated in this book which he felt was a gap in naval literature. Bruce Allen Elleman received his B.A. degree from UC Berkeley in 1982, M.A. and Harriman Institute Certificate at Columbia University in 1984, followed by the M.Phil. in 1987, East Asian Certificate in 1988, and Ph.D. in 1993. In addition, he completed the M.Sc. in International History at the London School of Economics in 1985, and the Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies (with Distinction) at the U.S. Naval War College in 2004. He is Research Professor in the Maritime History Department, Center for Naval Warfare Studies, U.S. Naval War College, and author of Moscow and the Emergence of Communist Power in China, 1925-30: The Nanchang Uprising and the Birth of the Red Army (London: Routledge, 2009); Waves of Hope: The U.S. Navy’s Response to the Tsunami in Northern Indonesia Newport Paper 28 (Newport, R.I.: Naval War College Press, 2007
