Chitosan is a rather abundant material with exquisite properties, which may be processed into a variety of materials including hydrogels, fibres, membranes, etc. The production of chitosan-based nanogels, also known as macromolecular miceles, has been successfully achieved using different techniques, which will be reviewed. This book covers the properties and applications of chitosan nanogels in the biomedical field, namely as a drug delivery vehicle for biopharmaceuticals. The main achievements and recent developments will be addressed in this book.

Miguel Gama received his Ph.D. in Biological Engineering at Minho University, in Portugal, in 1996. He is currently Associate Professor with Habilitation at Minho University, where he directs the FUNCARB Laboratory, a research group with about 20 researchers. He has authored/edited 4 books, over 100 papers in international journals, and 2 patents. Was the co-founder of a spinoff from Minho University, BNCTechnologies, dedicated to the development of applications for bacterial cellulose. His research interests include enzyme technology - enzymatic degradation of biomass - and the development of biomaterials, in particular bacterial cellulose, self-assembled amphiphilic nanogels and injectable hydrogels, aiming the development of applications for tissue regeneration and drug delivery.

Introduction; Production of Chitosan-Based Nanoparticles; Biomedical Applications; Conclusions; Index.
