Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs, 2nd edition, is a systematic, synthetic phonics programme designed for learners with additional needs. It offers a refreshingly simple and accessible approach to the teaching of phonics, breaking it down into manageable core elements and providing a wealth of accompanying activities. Comprised of 7 fully revised activity books and a Teacher’s Manual, this set provides a comprehensive and accessible resource to use with pupils with a range of additional needs of any age.
Each book in the series progressively develops pupils’ understanding of the relationship between sounds and letters, offering structured support to help them master the alphabetic code. The series includes:
Activity Book 1: introduces the basic alphabetic code and explores the key skills associated with using and managing it to read and spell vowel-consonant and consonant-vowel-consonant words.
Activity Book 2: reinforces pupils’ knowledge of the basic sounds explored in Book 1 and uses these to build words with adjacent consonants.
Activity Books 3-6: focus on the advanced alphabetic code, teaching pupils about key sounds and the skills and concepts needed to be able to use and manage the code to successfully read and spell words.
Activity book 7: focuses on reading and spelling words with 2, 3 and 4 syllables, whilst revising the key sounds of the advanced code. Book 7 also explores morphology, specifically key prefixes and suffixes.
Teacher’s Manual: includes thorough guidance on how to assess, plan and deliver the programme to pupils, with an understanding of the evidence-led rationale behind the programme’s design and structure.
Offering tried-and-tested material which can be printed for each use, this is an invaluable resource to simplify phonics teaching. It supports easy delivery for teachers, teaching assistants and tutors, and provides a fun, accessible way of teaching literacy for all children.
