This book offers a critical analysis of Taiwan’s #MeToo movement, tracing its emergence from the Netflix series Wave Makers and its impact on survivor empowerment.
The book presents an original study of the #MeToo movement in Taiwan, focusing on how the movement was instigated by and communicated in the wake of the Taiwanese Netflix series Wave Makers. It first examines how the storyline and character design of the show correspond to the unique challenges survivors of sexual violence face in Taiwan and, in this process, explicates how fictional narratives are translated into actionable forms of social mobilization that empower survivors of sexual violence. The rest of the book examines the ways in which communications of #MeToo took place on social media in Taiwan, using case studies and secondary sources to explore the strengths and limitations of #MeToo as hitherto witnessed in Taiwan’s media space.
