Is milk still fit for the 21st century? This fascinating book from an undecided dairy and oat milk dabbler takes us on a journey from dairy farms to plant-based pioneers. Written by Orla Shortall, grandchild of dairy farmers and an academic researching the industry, it spans farms across the Global North.
Are milk and dairy products fit foodstuffs for the 21st century? This exploration of the dairy dilemma aims to help us consider our own relationship to milk through exploring the ‘udderbelly’ of how milk gets made. It looks at the problems with dairy farming as it currently exists, at the most-popular alternative of veganism and plant-based products, and non-mainstream ideas about how we should conduct our relationship with cows. Each chapter is set on a different farm in the industrialised Global North – Europe and North America, Australia and New Zealand – and tells the farmer’s story, as well as that of their cows.

A fascinating investigation into the issues from a personal, millennial, scientific and farming perspective, written in an engaging style for a general readership of curious non-fiction readers, both the scientifically aware and food and animal lovers.

Orla Shortfall is the grandchild of dairy farmers, an academic researching diary farming and a spoken-word poet and stand-up comedian. She is an interdisciplinary social scientist, researching farmer decision-making and governance of agricultural systems, at The James Hutton Institute in Aberdeen. She started performing stand-up comedy in 2017 and has performed in venues across Scotland, including at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
