Social work practice involves working with diverse populations, particularly people in distressing circumstances and those who are disadvantaged or marginalised. Working with children experiencing neglect and abuse, those who encounter domestic violence, or people dealing with family breakdown, mental health, or substance misuse are issues frequently encountered in practice. This necessitates the proficient use of a range of skills, techniques, and strategies of assessment and intervention to alleviate distress, enhance coping, and promote well-being and functioning. This book has been written by academics and practitioners with substantial experience who bring together theoretical frameworks, issues in practice, and focus on what works best with people facing a range of psychosocial problems. The contributors adopt an evidence-based approach that is rooted in practice experience besides drawing from current research and the extant literature.

Selwyn Stanley, PhD, has been in academia for more than four decades and was Reader and Head of the social work department at Bishop Heber College, India before moving to the UK in 2007. He has taught in several universities in the UK and is an active researcher with interests in mental health, family caregiving and the professional development and experiences of social work students and practitioners and has published extensively in these areas. He is the editor of three books titled 'Social Work Education in Countries of the East'; 'Contemporary Social Problems in the UK' and 'International Perspectives on Family Caregiving'. He was previously with Edge Hill University, UK as Senior Lecturer in Social Work and currently teaches at Regent College London, UK.
