This book is a selection from papers presented at a conference sponsored by the Highlands Institute for American Religious Thought in Highlands, North Carolina, in June 1995. The central theme of the conference concerned the religious dimensions of Richard Rorty's neo-pragmatism. Professor Rorty presented the keynote address for this conference, which is included in the present volume, and he responded personally to a series of plenary addresses on his thought. The Highlands Institute emphasizes the interface between theology and philosophy. It is especially concerned with theological efforts utilizing the American philosophical tradition (including pragmatism and religious empiricism), with the history and development of distinctively American religious thought, with themes relevant to the «Chicago School» of theology, and with naturalism in American religious thought.

The Editors: Charley D. Hardwick received his Ph.D. from Yale University and is a professor of philosophy and religious studies at American University in Washington, D.C. In addition to articles in professional journals, he is the author of Faith and Objectivity: Fritz Buri and the Hermeneutical Foundations of a Radical Theology; Religious Truth in the Absence of God; and Events of Grace: Naturalism, Existentialism, and Theology. A recipient of Danforth, Guggenheim, American Council of Learned Societies, and The Society for Values in Higher Education fellowships, he also served as editor of the American Academy of Religion «Aids to the Study of Religion» and «Studies in Religion» monograph series. Donald A. Crosby received his Ph.D. from Columbia University and is a professor of philosophy at Colorado State University.
