The author introduces students to critical/political economy approaches to planning, and outlines theories of uneven development, the state and ideology, showing how the theories can be applied. The book thus puts students of planning history, urban planning, and planning theory in touch with a literature which had mushroomed in the late 1970s, both in the UK and overseas. Practising planners will find the discussion of contemporary issues such as planning aid and professionalism useful. The case study of planning in Edinburgh will be of value to all those interested in the development of that city.
Cliff Hague, OBE, has been President of CAP (2000–2006) and of the Royal Town Planning Institute (1996). He is Emeritus Professor in Planning and Spatial Development at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh. He has been Secretary General of CAP and Chair of Built Environment Forum Scotland.
