Two of Emma Hornby’s most beloved and page-turning historical sagas available for the first time in a 2-for-1 edition. Two mothers will stop at nothing to protect their children . . .
A Shilling for a Wife
A dismal cottage in the heart of Bolton, Lancashire, has been Sally’s prison since her abusive husband ‘bought’ her from the workhouse for just a shilling. When Sally gives birth, she knows she needs to save her child from her husband’s clutches. But a fresh start does not come without a price . . .
A Mother’s Dilemma
Seventeen-year-old Jewel knows nothing of her true origins. Assaulted and left pregnant by her hateful cousin, she desperately follows an advertisement to a house in Bolton’s slums, where a woman promises to help her when the child is born. But she is faced with the shocking reality that fleeing from her past is not an option – and with the most heartbreaking dilemma of her life . . .
Lose yourself in the captivating world of Emma Hornby's stories:
'A great read from start to finish' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
'A marvellous true-to-life story of how some people in the not-too-distant past struggled to survive in terrible conditions' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐
'I was hooked from page one!' ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Emma Hornby lives on a tight-knit working-class estate in Bolton and has read sagas all her life. Before pursuing a career as a novelist, she had a variety of jobs, from care assistant for the elderly, to working in a Blackpool rock factory. She was inspired to write after researching her family history; like the characters in her books, many generations of her family eked out life amidst the squalor and poverty of Lancashire's slums.
