The book starts with a history of Romanian semiotics as represented by its key figures, most of them internationally known. It then introduces two new concepts. The first is the concept of conversational history, meaning the sum total of the conversations between two or more speakers, which is productive in the analysis of theatrical and novelistic texts. The second is the concept of existential rereading, which accounts for the interrelationship between the immediate context and the action of reading again and again a text that is particularly important for us. A collaborative direction is the focus of two articles written in the framework of the Contrastive Analysis Project conducted by the researchers of the University of Bucharest, Romania and those of the Applied Linguistic Center of Washington D.C., USA on the acquisition of English language by Romanian speakers. Finally, a Database of Romanian Love Charms is described.

Born in Romania, Sanda Golopentia has been established in the US and has taught in the Department of French Studies at Brown University since 1981. She is currently Professor Emerita at Brown and has recently been elected an honorary Member of the Romanian Academy. Her publications on the subjects of linguistics, literary pragmatics and cultural semiotics include the following books: Les voies de la pragmatique (1988); Voir les didascalies (1994), Les propos spectacle: Études de pragmatique théâtrale (1996); Intermemoria — Studii de pragmatică și antropologie (2001); Hacia una nueva definición de las didascalías (2010), Learn to sing, my mother said – Songs of the women of Breb.
