A comprehensive synthesis of current research on crypt burials in Early Modern Europe promoting a shared methodological framework and outlining best practices in the field. Includes regional and detailed case studies in a multidisciplinary exploration that integrates bioarchaeology, material culture studies, social history, and archival research.
This is an innovative work that arises from vibrant discussions among leading scholars at the European Association of Archaeologists' Annual Meeting in Rome in 2024. This volume provides a comprehensive synthesis of current research on crypt burials in Early Modern Europe. The editors have successfully established a shared methodological framework and outlined best practices in the field, making this book an essential resource for researchers. It includes regional and detailed case studies that significantly enhance our understanding of crypt burial practices.

Crypt burials are deeply rooted in Christian traditions and represent a fascinating phenomenon in Early Modern Europe. These burials within church walls were markers of social status and generated income for parishes and churches. They symbolised noble birth and economic privilege, illustrating the roles of the deceased and their families in society. For individuals aiming to rise in social standing, this practice was crucial for cementing their legacy and prestige.

The opulence surrounding funerary practices required extensive preparation, leading to delays between death and burial. Consequently, the deceased were subjected to unique preservation techniques to ensure they remained in suitable condition for elaborate ceremonies. These complexities make crypt burials a rich topic for multidisciplinary exploration, integrating bioarchaeology, material culture studies, social history, and archival research.

This volume is an essential resource for academics and archaeology, history, and cultural heritage professionals. Its interdisciplinary approach and case studies make it ideal for university courses on funerary practices. Heritage professionals will find practical frameworks for preserving crypt sites, while students will appreciate its accessible content on mortuary archaeology. The book includes cutting-edge research, such as palaeobotanical studies and textile analysis, making it a valuable addition to collections in the field. Its significance in studying crypt burials solidifies its impact across academic and professional domains.

Katarzyna Ślusarska is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of History, University of Szczecin, Poland. She holds a postgraduate diploma in Forensic Biology. Her research spans mortuary archaeology, human osteology, and bioarchaeology, focusing on burial practices and developing methodologies for assessing Early Modern crypt burials. Małgorzata Grupa is a professor at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, Poland, specialising in funerary archaeology and bioarchaeology. She explores historical textiles and burial practices, linking clothing and funerary textiles to the material culture of the Early Modern period and has pioneered methodologies for preserving and reconstructing burial textiles. Marcin Majewski is Director of the Archaeological and Historical Museum in Stargard, and chairs Archaeology at the University of Szczecin. He currently leads a project examining the 16th-17th century Noble Crypts of Western Pomerania, investigating the cultural implications of crypt burials in this Protestant region. Joanna Rennwanz is Assistant Professor at the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnology at the Polish Academy of Sciences, specialising in archaeobotany. She studies the role of plants in prehistory and their symbolic meanings in funerary contexts and is involved in the Western Pomeranian Crypt Project, investigating plant remains from the Second World War mass graves. Andreas Ströbl is a researcher dedicated to Early Modern and Modern burial practices, especially crypts. He co-leads the Forschungsstelle Gruft in Lübeck, Germany, focusing on researching and restoring historical burial sites.
