Mr Bernbaum considers the effects of industrialization and traces the growth of the educational system in terms of its relationship to the social structure and to the economic system. He examines educational reconstruction and reorganisation in the 1930’s, changes in educational practice during this period, and finally analyses the situation in 1944. Gerald Bernbaum was an educationist and university administrator. He began his career as assistant master at Mitcham County Grammar School for Boys in 1958. He became a lecturer of education at the University of Leicester in 1964, before moving into administration as the university’s pro-vice Chancellor in 1985. In 1993 he moved to South Bank University to become vice-chancellor and chief executive. Following his retirement in 2001, he became chairman of Morley College, London, an institution devoted to the promotion of adult education and life-long learning.
