Looking at the cultural and political history of how practice is used in teacher education helps us to understand the central tensions in teacher education internationally, excavating the past in order to develop critical visions for the future of teacher education.

Katherine Schultz is Professor in the School of Education at the University of Colorado Boulder, USA. Rachel Throop is Assistant Professor at Barnard College, Columbia University, USA.
