This book is a clarion call for national, state, and local transformational change. The goal is to substantially increase the employment participation rates of working-age youth and adults with disabilities so they can successfully contribute their unique skills and talents. The book advances the case that disability policymakers, organizational leaders, educators, people with disabilities, family members, disability service professionals, business leaders, and community members must work together to reimagine how future supports will be delivered. The chapter content identifies innovative, researched practices known to increase competitive employment and social inclusion outcomes of people with complex disabilities in their labor force and communities. The Death of Rehabilitation is not about an end to services. It is about a rebirth. It is about adopting, decentralizing, and delivering services in new ways, where they are needed, and in the right measure, so people once considered 'unemployable' can live their best lives.

As a strategic leader, manager, author, and consultant, Don Lavin has 51 years of professional experience in the disability employment space advancing competitive integrated employment in support of job seekers with significant disabilities. This includes roles as senior manager of a nationally recognized employment development organization and Executive Director of The Arc Minnesota, a statewide disability advocacy network. As Principal of Strengths@Work, Lavin consults nationally and internationally on organizational transformation, person-centered planning, evidence-based employment practices, and building the internal capacities of businesses to hire, train, supervise, and support workers with complex job support needs. A collaborating partner with Minnesota's Transformation Initiative Technical Assistance Center, Lavin guides service providers in modernizing their business model and direct service practices to increase competitive employment and social inclusion. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his contributions to the employment of youth and adults with disabilities, including the Minnesota Association of People Supporting Employment First (APSE's) Lifetime Achievement Award.
