Laura A. De Veau, Ed.D., is a seasoned higher education professional with over 30 years of leadership and administrative experience. As the Principal and Founder of Fortify Associates, LLC, she specializes in strategic planning, training, and organizational development for mission-driven organizations. Her higher education journey began in 1989, leading to her role as Vice President for Student Affairs at Mount Ida College (2013-2018), where she oversaw 23 functional areas, including Residential Life and Athletics. Currently, Dr. De Veau is a Visiting Assistant Professor at Boston College's Lynch School of Education and teaches at Boston University's Wheelock College of Education and Human Development. Her courses span Student Affairs Administration, Strategic Planning, and Higher Education Issues. An engaging communicator, Dr. De Veau hosts the podcast Office Hours with Dr. De Veau, writes the Substack newsletter What's Up in the Academy?, and will launch a new podcast, What's Your Major?, in January 2025. Her contributions have been recognized with multiple awards, including NASPA's 2023 Outstanding Contribution to Higher Education. She has served as faculty for NASPA institutes and participated in advocacy initiatives. Beyond academia, she's been a Champion for Change with the Boston Area Rape Crisis Center and served as Board President of the Boston Gay Men's Chorus. Dr. De Veau holds an Ed.D. from Northeastern University, an M.Ed. from Boston University, and a B.S. in Journalism. Her dissertation explored the impact of institutional closures on students.
In this comprehensive compendium, Dr. De Veau explores pressing issues such as declining enrollment, mental health concerns, and the need for inclusive policies within the unique political climate of higher education. Each case study serves as a practical example, encouraging readers to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic scenarios while fostering a deeper understanding of effective leadership in student affairs.
