Chapter 1
The Crisis of Civility in a Chaotic World
(Intervention Please!)
1.1 Addressing the Current Crisis of Civility in a Chaotic World. Why we need intervention.
As I stated in my introduction, we seem to live in an uncivilized chaotic era, where I believe that the world is starved for decency and order. This is evident when:
- A former U.S. President is indicted with numerous felony charges and faces the possibility of imprisonment but manages to regain popularity and support to become President for another term as his followers quickly rally around him to represent the nation.
- Pastors and Clergy evolve into con men and women leaving the innocent baffled and none trusting.
- U.S. Senators thrive on cynicism.
- Policemen and other authority figures lead with bullying and brutality.
- School Teachers hide as pedophiles.
- Married couples including Christian couples roll the relationship dice and become divorcees 35-50% of the time.
- CEOs become thieves and robbers and Investors and Financial Experts grow their pockets at the detriment and impoverishment of their clients.
- Individuals seem to hoard leadership titles, positions, and fame as a bandage to fix broken, poor and low esteem.
Intervention is surely needed, and it is time to model the way and grow more of this rare breed—The Ethical Leader
My book offers hope in the form of a concerted attempt to grow Ethical Leaders who may be faced with many complex challenges in today’s rapidly changing and volatile world but who remain cemented and unchanged. Our volatile world is often filled with many uncertainties. Although some aspects of change are a normal part of life, the 21st century has been filled with a worldwide landscape of unprecedented volatility. Volatility can be defined as the quality or state of being unstable, unpredictable, explosive, changeable, inconsistent, and unsteady. Volatility can be defined as the nature and dynamics of change as well as the nature and speed of change forces and change catalysts. The 21st century has been filled with a worldwide landscape of unprecedented volatility including terrorism attacks on nations, wars, civil and political unrest, assassinations and attempted assassinations, school shootings at all ages and educational levels, and global financial crises.
As previously stated, we live in an era marked by rapid change and global connectivity. Many have witnessed the terrorist attacks on nations, political unrest, global monetary crisis, CEO departures from small and large companies, a global pandemic, churches forced to distance its interaction with parishioners and forced to close because of an unprecedented pandemic, increasing social injustices, mass shootings, wars, and much more. There is no doubt that this is a chaotic era for leaders. With the increase of these uncivil and chaotic factors, many doubts have been presented regarding the maintenance of civility as the world grapples with these complex shifts. Nonetheless, the need for ethical leadership becomes more evident than ever in these trying times. Biblically speaking, I Corinthians 15:58 encourages God’s people to be steadfast, unmovable, and always abounding in the works of the Lord, knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. I now see this passage as a forewarning thousands of years ago about this massive volatility in the way the world would think and believe, and how this volatility would come to threaten our stability and focus as leaders in God’s Kingdom. Further, Isaiah 33:6 says that wisdom and knowledge will be the stability of your times. Again, this Bible verse notes another intentional focus on remaining stable in seasons of volatility through wisdom in making decisions and in knowing how to think and act. These verses imply that we develop and maintain strong leadership insights by obtaining wisdom and knowledge of who we are as modern-day leaders. As we possess the necessary wisdom and knowledge that foster self-awareness regarding our leadership authority in God, we would have many opportunities to stand our ground and display our stable and strong character and standards by what we do in the face of any change or volatility.
This harnessing of wisdom, understanding and ability to nurture and pave the way for future Ethical Leaders who are well equipped to navigate varying seasons is imperative for the stability of our world today. Therefore, I introduce the following framework that empowers a leader to carry the standards of the “Leadership Ethics torch forward” in hopes of ensuring a positive impact on society, nations, organizations, and the world. This framework provides an opportunity to remain hopeful while inspiring a new generation of leaders who are confident and capable of upholding ethical standards and character in an ever-changing world. In a world that may be starved for Ethical Leadership.
I believe that there is an intricate relationship between the existing chaos, and the enduring and sure-footed legacy of ethical leadership. It is evident that in times of volatility leaders are called upon to maintain strong ethical character and make tough decisions to maintain focus, order, and sustainable civil progress. This is where being an Ethical Leader becomes paramount. Ethical Leadership can serve as a stabilizing force amidst chaos.
My “Modeling Discovery” framework (explained in more details in Chapter three) includes “a process of self-awareness, self-monitoring self-discovery, self-progression, and discovering the need for healing and the display of wholeness. This framework is an awareness tool and barometer to model the way amid changing and volatile times while maintaining the standards of ethical leadership. As previously quoted by Dr. Myles Munroe, many can agree that the world is filled with many characters who lack character. This crisis of character exacerbates and creates distrust among the public. Leadership requires a degree of excellence and development to achieve success among followers. More importantly, Kingdom Leaders must be equipped with the highest degree of excellence and development to successfully fulfill the Great Commission in the Earth. In Matthew 28: 19, after Jesus restored the authority of the Kingdom of God in the earth, He commissioned us to go and make disciples of all the nations. It is quite evident that the “nations” and their problems have become increasingly complex and varied since Jesus walked the earth, yet God expects His Kingdom leaders to walk in authority and reach the World for Him. All leaders are faced with the same challenges of a complex and multidimensional world and therefore must be equipped and ready to lead in this challenging environment.
To fully understand the “Modeling Discovery” concept, we must first dig deep into the following mutually inclusive areas:
1.2 Understand the “Tourmaline Chameleon Effect”
Let’s begin with some thought-provoking questions.
This is a transparent moment.
- Is it possible to be transformational without becoming conformational?
- Can one successfully and positively transform a chaotic and uncivilized environment while remaining untainted?
- Can there be collaboration without intentional exacerbation?
- Is there genuine coaching without sabotaging or leadership structure without anticipated disaster?
You get the point. Now stop for a moment and ponder the fact that there is no debate here. Do you agree that some things cannot be compromised? In a generation and in a world where people seem to thrive on error, wrongs, evil, injustice, and the like, foundational values cannot, and should never be entertained with the thought of change. What’s right will always be right. Bedrock morals and values are not meant to change and should never be compromised.
The key role of an Ethical Leader is to display principles of unchanging standards that foster and display truth when applied and principles of integrity that cause one to confidently make and voice the right decisions that are unaffected and consistent on every platform and in every situation or opportunity encountered. Inherently, Ethical Leaders will act rightly even amidst change and volatility.
Our society has experienced many scandals and negative ethical failures and mistakes which show the importance of ethical conduct in leadership roles and in decision making. For example, scandals of unethical behaviors such as those made by the Enron Company, exposed in 2001 and the 2023 and 2024 indictment on the actions of the former US President Donald Trump including the apparent ethical breach of President Trump’s former CPA are classical examples of how unethical behaviors directly correlate with improper leadership decision making that can have permanent, long-lasting, and even criminal impact on a professional industry and on trusted leadership positions. However, it is my belief that leaders who exhibit and exemplify positive ethical behavior also promote positive and essential ethical conduct as they make decisions that foster the success of any industry, organization, environment, relationship, and the reputation...
