A comprehensive synopsis of methodological approaches to sustainable agricultural production, discussing advantages and shortcomings. The authors review the validity of research results for the assessment of sustainability of current land use systems in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Currently sustainable agricultural production is more than ever regarded as a major precondition of economic development. So far. various definitions and methodological concepts have been forwarded to measure the sustainability of agroecosystems and farming systems. This work provides a comprehensive synopsis of these methodological approaches and it discusses their advantages and shortcomings. On the basis of this synopsis the authors review the validity of research results for the assessment of sustainability of current land use systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. It is concluded that most research activities cover only partial aspects of sustainability. In particular, very little emphasis has been put so far on indigenously developed techniques to maintain soil fertility and hence sustainable agricultural production. The authors propose a modified multidisciplinary approach to identify sustainable land systems.

Introduction: statement of the problem. Part 1 The concept of sustainiability. Part 2 Objectives of the study. Part 3 Current state of knowledge - literature review: characteristics of research methodologies - parameters of sustainability, measurement level, data basis, time horizon; sustainability of current land use systems in Sub-Sahara Africa - physical aspects of land degradation, economic impacts of land degradation, socioeconomic causes of land degradation; the potential role of indigenous measures to maintain soil productivity. Part 4 Proposal for a research programme: synthesis of findings - the need for a modified research approach; the goals of a general research programme; the research issues; the time frame; the organizational set-up; expected results of the proposed research programme.
