This guide describes the challenges student teachers face and how to cope with them. It addresses such topics as: classroom management and discipline; co-operative learning; special-needs students and mainstreaming; and multicultural education and sensitivity to ethnic and gender issues.
The third edition of this popular textbook was written because of the changes that have taken place in education, psychology, and society at large in recent years -- changes that are very much related to student teaching and teaching in general. Written for student teachers, this volume is intended to be practical and useful, especially during the weeks of student teaching assignment but also during the early years of teaching.

Over the years, student teachers have shared with the Schwebels what their student teaching assignments meant to them -- excitement and challenge, and also concern and anxiety. What these student teachers offered during personal conversations, written journals, and seminar discussions forms the heart of this volume. In essence, they were experiencing the normal and typical human reactions to a brand new undertaking. This book is about those reactions and how best to cope with them -- how to successfully confront the exciting new challenges and turn the concerns and anxieties into experiences of personal and professional growth. It also suggests new ideas concerning classroom management and discipline; cooperative learning; legal issues; special-needs students and mainstreaming; multicultural education and sensitivity to ethnic, gender, and racial issues; relating to cooperating teachers; working collaboratively with parents; and other topics.

The Schwebels wrote this third edition with the same philosophy as that of the earlier versions -- experienced teachers should be sharing ideas with those entering the profession. They clearly visualize the very real challenges student teachers face and the down-to-earth solutions they need. When possible, they are simple and direct in their analyses and recommendations.

This edition is particularly user-friendly -- major topics are highlighted at the beginning of each chapter and critical issues are raised as questions at the end of each chapter. These additions and other modifications make it easier for readers to apply the principles and practices presented.
