This book is aimed at watchmakers or engineers who want to learn more about watch technology such as design, industrial production and modern process technologies. Modern development processes such as Design for Six Sigma and production techniques such as lean manufacturing are explained. With a few exceptions, the physical, mathematical formulae are not derived, but simply applied. Many calculations are carried out using Excel® tables. Prepared Excel® tables are therefore also used for these documents.
In this book you will learn how to construct a mechanical automatic movement from scratch. The choice of the right escapement and the calculation of the hairspring are also included. New technologies such as silicon are introduced and new processes such as laser cutting are described. You will learn how to apply robust design and how the movement is tested. There is also a chapter on case construction.
One chapter is dedicated to chronometry and shows how precision can be improved. Various quality methods are shown so that the movement fulfils the most modern requirements of up to 10 years warranty.
One chapter is dedicated to Hertzian pressure, so that the gear train achieves a very high degree of efficiency and a long service life. The construction elements chapter shows industrial solutions with state-of-the-art manufacturing processes.
