The 2nd edition of Foundations and Applications of Exercise Science expanded the original 14 chapters to incorporate 7 new chapters and revised the original chapter 2 on Professional and Academic Preparations in Exercise Science. For example, the authors added three new chapters on mental health and exercise such as Parkinson's Disease and Exercise Science, Alzheimer's Disease and Exercise Science, and Neuromuscular Disorders and Exercise Training; plus, one chapter on Exercise Conditioning for Healthy Older Adults, one chapter on Common Ankle Injuries in the Athletes, and one chapter on Shoulder Injuries in the Athletes. In addition, the authors included a chapter one Skeletal Muscle Angiogenesis and Improvement in Exercise Capacity. Regular exercise as we now know meeting the Physical Activity Recommendations assembled by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention can lead to more long-term health benefits.

For example:

For youth, exercise and physical activity can help improve cognition, bone health, fitness, and heart health. It can also reduce the risk of depression.

For adults, exercise and physical activity help prevent 8 types of cancer such as colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, bladder, breast, stomach, and lung; reduces the risk of dementia (including Alzheimer's disease), all-cause mortality, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and depression; and improves bone health, physical function, and quality of life.

For older adults, exercise and physical activity can lower the risk of falls and muscle/tendon injuries from falls.

For pregnant women, exercise and physical activity reduce the risk of postpartum depression.

For all groups, exercise and physical activity reduce the risk of excessive weight gain and helps people maintain a healthy weight.
