With updates to every chapter, this new fourth edition serves as the premier guide to professional writing for the naval services. Authored by a naval officer who taught English at two service academies, the book is widely used by officers, enlisted men and women and civilians in both the Navy and Marine Corps. Shenk provides sound, practical advice on all common naval writing assignments across digital and print platforms. Fully revised, the book reflects the changing landscape of professional communication in general and changes in naval culture in the last decade across the fleet, making it an essential guide.

Robert Shenk was a widely published professor of English at the University of New Orleans, and was also a retired captain in the U.S. Naval Reserve. He served on a destroyer and on river patrol boats during the Vietnam War, and later taught at two service academies. He lived in Mandeville, Louisiana. Dr. Christopher “Chip” Crane, USNA Class of 1990, has been teaching and training others in writing for over 25 years. He currently consults for the federal government and professional organizations in writing, presenting, leadership, team building, and strategic planning. Chip also teaches professional and technical writing at the University of Maryland at College Park. His 20 years in the Navy included a tour on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71), a deployment to Afghanistan, and retail and business management billets. Chip also served on the faculty of the Naval Academy’s English department, teaching professional writing and literature and directing the USNA Writing Center.
