There are a lot of closet musicians out there, to judge by the music-making craze that Apple's GarageBand software has given rise to. The appeal of this inexpensive application cuts across generations and genres and has developed a large and vibrant online community. GarageBand is inspiring creative uses even Apple hadn't imagined. Author Martin Gisborne, himself both a musician and an Apple product evangelist, tracked down a diverse cross-section of GarageBand users and interviewed them to find out how they've integrated it into their music making. Professional musicians like Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, and longtime AR man for Fender guitars, Hoda Armani, have found this simple, unassuming little application a great "sketchpad" for quickly capturing musical ideas and developing their songs, but readers will learn that you don't have to be a trained musician-or even a proficient one-to make surprisingly listenable music with GarageBand. Among Martin's interviewees are a teacher who uses it to inspire students, a multimedia artist who creates accompaniments to her visual work, a filmmaker who uses it to compose soundtracks for professional work, and a former rock musician, now a music producer, who's found GarageBand has brought him back to his songwriting roots. Their stories make for an entertaining and enlightening read, with valuable tips on using GarageBand.
Martin Gisborne is a photographer, writer, creative technologies consultant and occasionally known to bang out a tune on a guitar or Powerbook. He works extensively for Apple in Europe and occasionally in the US presenting seminars and demonstrating all manner of creative software at trade shows and events. He specializes in Mac computing in the fields of photography, graphics, video and, latterly, music; being the individual fortunate enough to launch GarageBand to the world at MacWorld San Francisco in January 2004 and then at the spectacular NAMM show in Anaheim.
