100+ creative activities to help Key Stage 2 pupils learn parts of speech and punctuation and discover how playing with language can make them better writers. Put all aspects of English grammar and punctuation in the National Curriculum into context. Practise and reinforce grammatical structures, patterns and concepts.
From spy school missions to tongue twisters, Cracking English Grammar in KS2 brings grammar to life with 100+ fun activities that boost skills, spark creativity and make writing unforgettable.

Every aspect of the National Curriculum for grammar and punctuation is brought to life in context. Pupils will practise key concepts through fun and engaging tasks - from writing poems and tongue twisters, to experimenting with sentences and clauses, performing punctuation, and even joining "spy school" to crack tricky spellings. Along the way, they'll tackle everything from fronted adverbials to modal verbs, but in ways that feel purposeful, memorable and enjoyable.

Each flexible activity is designed to take no more than an hour and can be easily slotted into any scheme of work. Because the tasks are written directly for pupils, they work well for independent use, paired work, or as whole-class teaching led by the teacher.

As pupils play with language, they will develop a deeper understanding of how it works, build their confidence, and grow as competent, enthusiastic writers. These activities don't just tick off curriculum points - they make writing come alive.

David Horner runs workshops for children and teachers on creative writing. He taught English and drama for 15 years before going on to be an advisory teacher with Cheshire LEA for 6 years and then a freelance writer and storyteller for nearly 20 years. With illustrator Anne Hodgkiss, David has published 10 books of poems for children and his poems have also appeared in many children's anthologies and been featured on radio. David writes regularly on creative writing in relation to young readers and writers and gives readings and performances to audiences of all ages and abilities.
