This innovative learning tool for students in journalism courses is packaged as a computer-based simulation on CD-ROM and offers six realistic scenarios to help students develop key professional skills. Students enter a virtual newsroom to undertake challenging reporting tasks ranging from producing copy under pressure to resolving ethical and editorial dilemmas. The simulations require responses to the demands of contacts, key editorial and production staff, as well as to typical obstacles to gathering and writing news stories. Students' work for each scenario is compiled into a secure Word document which is emailed to their lecturers for assessment. Students can work from home, and "HOTcopy" can be used either for skills development or as an assessment tool. A way for journalism students in their second or third year to hone their writing and decision-making skills in a realistic context, "HOTcopy" won the Australian Institute of Training and Development National Award for Innovation.
