This is one of two texts derived from the sixth international research conference of the British Educational Leadership Management and Administration Society (BELMAS), held in Cambridge in March, 2000. Eight chapters are revised papers from the conference, two are reworkings of papers from other BEL
The charismatic transformational leader, who creates a ′vision′ for the future of their organization and persuades others to follow their path towards it, is now the dominant viewpoint that underpins government policies towards leadership development in the English-speaking world.



This book offers a much-needed corrective to this orthodoxy by focusing on current research and thinking about ′leadership′ rather than ′leaders. A wide range of prominent international contributors present a rare self critical look at their own assertions and test alternative leadership models against recent research projects. They also demonstrate how their analysis is relevant to all countries where leadership is an issue.

Dr Lesley Anderson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Education at the UK’s The Open University (OU). Her current responsibilities include chairing the only compulsory module in the Masters in Education programme, supervising and examining doctoral students and leading the educational leadership and management academic area within the Doctorate in Education (EdD) programme.  Additionally, Lesley is involved in various research activities.  In addition to the DelPHE project, current projects include the relationship between leadership and social inclusion and access to and other issues connected with higher level study by prisoners
