This is an examination of the Thomas Jefferson and John Adams 1800 electoral race, arguably the most controversial in American history, a resulting tie threw the final decision into a House vote. This work looks at the election in the context of geopolitical and racial developments.

Jan Ellen Lewis is Professor of History and Director of the Graduate History Program at Rutgers University, the author of The Pursuit of Happiness: Family Values in Jefferson's Virginia, and coeditor with Peter S. Onuf of Sally Hemings and Thomas Jefferson: History, Memory, and Civic Culture (Virginia). Peter S. Onuf, Thomas Jefferson Foundation Professor of History at the University of Virginia, is the author of Jefferson's Empire: The Language of American Nationhood (Virginia).
