Aesop never intended his work to be anything but bawdy, savage, witty, scatological and fickle but these tales also have at their heart two realities of life, the exercise of power and the lot of the powerless. In this stunning new edition, the words of Carlo Gébler and Gavin Weston’s beautiful illustrations strip all judgement away to reveal the central truths: we are all a bit gullible, often foolish and forever hopelessly optimistic. Readers might relate to the god who plays games, to the slave with no control, the fierce animals who kill or even the weaker creatures who are butchered. In retelling Aesop’s famous fables for the twenty-first century, Gébler encourages us to look behind the violence and the moral platitudes for what is really going on, bringing us a dark, realistic and compulsively readable survival guide for our troubled world.

Carlo Gébler is the author of several novels, including The Innocent of Falkland Road (2017) and The Dead Eight (2011), which was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Fiction Award. He is a prolific talent, having written novels for children, as well as several plays for both radio and stage. He has written extensively in publications such as the Irish Independent, the Guardian, the Financial Times and The Dublin Review. Gavin Weston was born in Belfast, studied Fine Art at Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design and Goldsmiths’ College, London, and University of Ulster. He has lectured at University of Ulster and Belfast Metropolitan College for many years and was a regular contributor to The Sunday Times from 1994 to 2002. He is a former prize-winner of the Claremorris Open and Iontas, a recipient of The Tyrone Guthrie Award and was nominated for The Becks Futures Award in 2002.
