Demokratie und Erwachsenenbildung, Erwachsenenbildung und Demokratie – wie sie aufeinander wirken, wie sie voneinander abhängig sind, das ist das Thema dieser hier erstmals veröffentlichten Exilschrift, entstanden in Zusammenhang mit ‚German Educational Reconstruction (GER)‘ in London 1944/45.
Der Autor, Fritz Borinski (1903–1988), emigrierte 1934 nach Großbritannien und kehrte 1947 nach Deutschland zurück. Er ist einer der profiliertesten Wegbereiter der Professionalisierung und Verwissenschaftlichung der Erwachsenenbildung in Deutschland, ein entschiedener Demokrat, ein Patriot und ein Europäer.
Im Mittelpunkt seines Werks steht als demokratische Leitinstitution die vielgestaltige Volkshochschule der Weimarer Republik, die er sowohl aus einer engagierten Innensicht als auch aus einer kritisch-strukturierenden Außensicht portraitiert.
Die historisch-soziologische Fallskizze mündet in ein Bildungsprogramm für den Aufbau der Demokratie im Europa der Zeit nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Borinskis Perspektiven auf Regimewandel, kulturellen Neubau und politische Rekonstruktion sind von allgemeiner und auch aktueller Bedeutung.
Der Quellentext erscheint auf Englisch; die Beiträge der Herausgeberin – Einleitung, erklärende Anmerkungen und der umfangreiche Anhang zu Personen – erscheinen auf Deutsch.
