"Understanding Oucomes-Based Education" is one of a series of nine, open learning modules which aim to develop teacher competencies. Each module consists of a learning guide, reader, interactive video and audio tape.
"Understanding Outcomes-Based Education" is the first module in a series of nine flexible, open learning modules containing material that can stand alone or form part of a core programme. All the modules are organised around key issues and aim to develop teacher competencies. These modules are designed by teacher educators for use by teachers and teacher educators. Increased competence is being spoken of as the key outcome towards which both trainers in industry and teachers in schools and colleges should aim. What does "outcomes-based" education mean for curriculum and assessment practices? What are the knowledge assumptions that underpin OBE? "Understanding Outcomes-Based Education" interprets the thinking that underpins OBE, arguing for a "holistic" approach to OBE and for educational practices that develop learners as whole individuals who are able to think, act, and make value choices. It also looks at the difference these understandings make to curriculum-design and assessment practices, and asks whether this change is appropriate and what alternative approaches to curriculum and assessment are available.
Each module consists of a learning guide, reader, interactive video and audio tape. Designed to be ideal for distance education, self-study, face-to-face teaching and pre-service or in-service and in a number of different contexts, the series seeks to encourage independent, ongoing professional development for all educators.
