Designed to be an aid to those involved in planning, organizing and running district health services worldwide. This edition includes many of the evolving principles of management which have been adapted for application to health care and which can be used in the restructuring of health services.
The second edition of District Health Care brings together a great deal of field experience gained from different countries in the development of Primary Health Care. At the same time, new development and methods of management have been described together with their application in health. More significantly, whilst maintaining the convergence between behavioural and social sciences and management, the book heads in a new direction, that is, the convergence between health management and the epidemiological sciences. This is identified as the growing point in the past decade and is likely to continue to develop well into the 21st century.

Part 1 The need for management in district health care: who is this book for? in what district?; why is a new approach to health care needed? how have the old approaches failed; a new approach to health care and its management requirements. Part 2 Finding out about health needs in the district: who? what? where? when? why? in ill health; what is wrong with existing health services?; identifying local resources. Part 3 Making a health plan for the district: what is a plan?; the planning process. Part 4 Building the health organization in the district: formal and informal organization; an organization as a skill pyramid; an organization as a network of individuals; an organization as a system or series of systems for getting things done; some key principles in an effective organization; the key elements of an effective organization. Part 6 Getting feedback - monitoring and evaluation: why do we need feedback?; what should be evaluated?; what are the essential elements of primary health care which need to be evaluated?; which level? which component? - levels of education; what level of feedback and which component in a programme?; which specific questions can feedback from a health care programme consider?; how can data be obtained to find out what is going on?; quick or long? and what disciplines in getting feedback on a programme?; examples of data collection forms and systems used in local communities; choice of evaluation methods; who is to obtain the feedback information; where should the feedback be done?; when should feedback information be obtained?; constraints on getting feedback.
