Writing and research in Social Work is a practical guide for social work students that has three goals: (1) to provide instruction for students on how to conduct research for a literature review; (2) to provide active learning activities to write a literature review; and, (3) to offer strategies on how to present a literature review. After working through this guide, students will be able to develop a literature review that could aid in evaluating an agency practice or service. Students will experience a direct connection between research and practice, and contribute to the improvement of delivery of social work services.

Dr. Laura Brierton Granruth, MSW, helped to design the writing class for social work majors at the Millersville University School of Social Work and has been teaching this since Fall 2014. She is involved in a research project to evaluate her pedagogy in this class. As with many social work scholars, she has conducted literature reviews as a student and an instructor. She took lessons from a trained editor during her doctoral program. Finally, she engages an editor for her own work and has learned valuable lessons from the feedback. Ms. Tatiana Pashkova-Balkenhol is Undergraduate Research and Instruction librarian and serves as a subject librarian for the School of Social Work. She has been collaborating with Dr. Granruth since the inception of the course. The authors have co-presented on their collaborative teaching experience in the writing social work course at both local and national conferences and received positive feedback from conference attendees.
