The Daily Tar Heel, UNC-Chapel Hill's student newspaper, has been a vibrant voice on campus since its founding in 1893, when the university was still struggling to find its identity after the Civil War. The Daily Tar Heel, UNC-Chapel Hill's student newspaper, has been a vibrant voice on campus since its founding in 1893, when the university was still struggling to find its identity after the Civil War. Along with lively coverage of athletics and campus activities, the DTH has captured world events as students experienced them, including two world wars, the Cold War, movements to democratize the campus and the country for women and African Americans, and the digital age. Kenneth Joel Zogry chronicles history of the Daily Tar Heel, examining the close and sometimes contentious relationship between the university and its paper and offering insights into campus events both well-known and barely remembered, including documenting the introduction of basketball to Chapel Hill much earlier than is commonly thought.

Zogry shows that the rise of UNC into a modern research university was mirrored by the rise of the newspaper, which counts governors, authors, and thousands of professional journalists among its alumni. Zogry concludes by detailing the DTH's efforts to produce journalists today, during a tumultuous time for the newspaper industry.

Kenneth Joel Zogry, Ph.D., is a public historian and researches and writes extensively about UNC history.
