This book provides those interested in legal theory, comparative law and the anthropology, and sociology of law an understanding of the emerging field of legal pluralism. In addition to reviewing the theoretical contributions of the scholars associated with the subject, the work presents these theories and concepts in an accessible way by centering the analysis on examples of pluri-legal orders. The work explains the jurisprudence and interdisciplinary theories of law that gave rise to the modern concepts of legal pluralism. It also exposes the reader to specific examples of multi-legal systems, and examines the international human rights aspects of each case. At the end of each chapter, the reader is invited to consider the examples of pluri-legal interaction in light of the theory already explained and to compare plural legal systems presented in that chapter to those discussed previously.

Dr Susan Hascall is Assistant Professor of Law at Duquesne University, USA. Her areas of research and teaching include Legal Pluralism, Islamic Law, Indigenous Peoples and Human Rights, Comparative and International Law, and Commercial and Banking Law. In particular, she has published and presented widely on aspects of Shari’ah Law.
